Who’s to say?

Ottmar Mergenthaler and his Linotype in Postage stamp

Hey there,

I really get happy when it’s time to write you, because you are so special to me!

Here’s Historical trivia for you again this month! What do you think?

Ottmar Mergenthaler was just a boy in Germany, but especially handy at repairing clocks, and became an apprentice. At 18, he immigrated to the US in 1872 to work in Washington, DC where he worked with an instrument maker. He was asked to develop a machine that reproduced typewriting. In 1877, he finished one, but it had many problems.

He didn’t quit, but kept at it, and in 1886, he’d improved it. It worked so well it was installed in the Office of the New York Times and Thomas Edison declared it to be the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. The Linotype still needed improving, but in 1890 the Linotype 1 printing machine revolutionized newspaper printing around the world for the next 70 years.

I found this in my research and had such fun! My character, Frederick Glade, in Book Two, was a newspaper reporter, who goes to see the Linotype, developed by a German man. In 1886, he went to the Berlin Zeitung newspaper office to see the model which Edison so revered.

It’s all fiction, but the first Linotypes were probably sold to large newspapers around the world. Book Two just happens to take place in Berlin during 1886, so, it’s a likely theory, I think, that my character Glade could’ve been awed by the demonstration of the 8th Wonder of the World. What do you think?
