Editorial/Reader Reviews

Editorial Review from Kirkus Reviews

A couple find love against the odds in late-19th century Germany in Holder’s series-starting historical novel. The book offers intriguing insights in the apprenticeship of a carpenter during this period; Nicklaus is at the of the compulsory two-year period of training, during which trainees must take a journey, “not marry, and …have chaste behavior.

This last part is, of course, rather complicated by the blossoming relationship between Nicklaus and Maria. The warmth and depth of the characters more than makes up for that. When someone reports seeing them together in a compromising situation, it threatens all they know and even makes them question their feelings for each other.

Overall, Holder manages to craft a compelling narrative that touches on a time and a place that aren’t frequently represented in historical fiction. The author’s extensive research makes for compelling reading. A cozy and enjoyable romance set in an underrepresented era for the genre.

Editorial Review from Online Book Club.org

Historical fiction possesses an exceptional ability to endear and entertain, particularly when the author skillfully weaves out a good plot from it. Ruby M Holder has accomplished precisely that in the first installment of her interesting novel, Etch of a Promise. This beautiful story encompasses themes of love, abuse, friendship, romance and the pursuit of fulfillment in life.

Set in the 1800s in Cologne, Germany, the book shows how life might have been for ordinary folks at the time. The narrative gains momentum swiftly as the soon-to-be lovers meet a second time in the bustling city. Their conversations were realistic and easy to follow. I love how the narrative was divided into sections under each main character’s’ name.

The incorporation of German phrases, words, interjections, and sentences at various points throughout the narrative was commendable. The author expertly integrated them into the character’s dialogues, ensuring a seamless flow. I never found myself struggling to comprehend the meaning of a phrase or word, as their meaning natural unfolded through the character’s subsequent action, speech or the provision of English equivalents. This aspect was truly noteworthy!

I believe it deserves 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction, romance, or anyone seeking an enjoyable and relaxing story.

Editorial Review from Grindstone Literary Services

It’s clear that you’ve given a lot of thought to Nicklaus’s personality and his background. I liked the way the shepherd summed him up: “You were curious, and you took the chance.” That’s a nice way to be introduced to a character, and I enjoyed the rest of their interaction as well.

It was fun to imagine Nicklaus on the journey; one we could scarcely imagine taking on ourselves but that still encapsulates the time period your story takes place. The German phrases used throughout really added to the sense of place as well. An interesting read.

Reviews from Readers

I finished the book today. I enjoyed it a lot. I praise the book highly. I read a lot of fiction (almost every day), but I have not before had any familiarity with 1880s Germany, so I found that part particularly interesting.

Good job. Way to go.

Etch of a Promise is an engaging story, rich in the history and geographic detail of Germany in 1886. I was transported to another time and place and caught familiar glimpses of myself as I grew to love the main characters, Nicklaus and Maria. Their inner journeys take them toward an understanding of human nature, giving them the strength to weather the obstacles to building their future together.

Readers will find Ruby M. Holder’s first novel captivating as it explores the universal themes of love, family, forgiveness and overcoming challenges.
